En–Knap. Dance on stage, film and in virtual reality. Across genres, spaces and generations.
En–Knap is the largest structure for contemporary dance in Slovenia, that develops, produces, and presents contemporary dance as an artistic practice, bridging stage, film and new technologies. At its core is En–Knap Group, a permanent ensemble for contemporary dance established in 2007, marking the year En–Knap shifted from a project-based to a repertoire-based production approach. Over two decades of sustained practice, En–Knap Group has developed a distinct artistic profile and a repertoire created in collaboration with internationally and nationally renowned choreographers and directors of diverse aesthetic backgrounds. The ensemble continuously performs in Slovenia and tours regularly abroad.
Since 2009, En–Knap has managed Španski Borci Cultural Centre, a public cultural infrastructure in Ljubljana and the home stage of En–Knap Group. In the near future, En–Knap will run new residency and studio facilities Telo Moste (Dance Residency Centre) within the renovated TEOL complex in the neighbouring Moste district, creating additional space for artistic research and contemporary dance development.
The Generations programme creates performances and creative processes for young audiences, while interventions bring dance into public space through site-specific works, celebrations, ceremonies, openings, and other public En–Knap appearances. Through collaborations with local and international partners, En–Knap develops co-productions by sharing resources and expertise across organisations. It also regularly presents international guest performances, connecting local audiences with contemporary dance from around the world, while residencies provide artists with space, technical support, and the conditions needed for research and artistic development.
Since 2019, En–Knap has been actively researching VR technologies in contemporary dance through its Stage360 programme. Combining production, artistic research and new modes of presentation, Stage360 develops immersive dance works, collective viewing formats and alternative touring models that bring choreography into new environments and reach audiences beyond conventional theatre settings. In 2025, En–Knap launched the NaKnap Festival, dedicated to short-form dance works from all over the world and contemporary crossovers between stage, film and virtual reality.
En–Knap’s programme and the activities of Španski Borci Cultural Centre have been continuously supported by the City of Ljubljana – Department of Culture and by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia since their establishment in 1994 and 2009.
