S.K.I.N. with En–Knap Group

The performance was inspired by Curzio Malaparte's famous unnerving novel La pelle (The Skin), which takes place in Naples in 1943, as the city is transformed by defeat into an open-air market of duplicity, prostitution and half-interred bodies, all of it overseen by Americans who, in their star-spangled naïveté, never completely understand why they are there. Rather than adapting the novel directly, the performance uses its atmosphere of disorientation and decay as a point of departure for exploring contemporary forms of power, survival and human resilience.

S.K.I.N. was originally choreographed by Iztok Kovač and Julyen Hamilton. Following its premiere in Ljubljana in November 2003, the performance toured extensively, appearing at festivals and venues across the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Poland. In En–Knap Group's version of S.K.I.N., the dancers take on the work with an original approach and an abundance of raw, youthful energy, conveying its critical message with a measure of irony and wit.

The performers determine the order of pre-prepared and improvised sequences in real time, while a guest musician joins them on stage to create a live musical score. This unpredictable and ever-changing structure demands constant attention from all participants, who must navigate not only shifting relationships with one another but also the unexpected interventions of the musician.

In 2011, Sebastiano Tramontana and En–Knap Group presented S.K.I.N. – EKG at Španski borci as a co-production between En–Knap Productions and Zavod Sploh within Neforma 10, an improvisation series connecting artists from the fields of contemporary music and dance. The performance was subsequently presented at several outdoor locations and Ljubljana venues, including Trg prekomorskih brigad (Kino Šiška), Slovenian Cinematheque and Kinodvor cinema.
