Bunker

Bunker is a solo performance about the pressures placed on the female body across generations. The body is both a space of constraint and a space of resistance: compressed, contained and controlled, yet constantly searching for a way to move, resist and endure. In this intensely physical solo, Rebecca Margolick moves between restraint and release, vulnerability and strength, creating a body that carries several layers of time at once.

The work grew out of archival research into the women who lived at the 92nd Y Residence and the Clara de Hirsch Home for Working Girls in New York between 1899 and 1950. Most of them were Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Margolick weaves their histories together with her own memories and experiences, approaching time as non-linear: the past returns through the body, individual experiences overlap, and history becomes something transmitted, repeated and transformed. Bunker is a personal yet generational study of containment, resistance and resilience.

The 2026 edition further strengthens the festival's commitment to regional artistic mobility. In collaboration with Festival Krila (Rijeka), Platformof contemporary dance (Maribor) and Zagreb Dance Festival, selected artists — Rebecca Margolick, Ching-Ying Chien and Charles Brecard — will continue their presentations and workshops beyond Ljubljana through a regional tour.

THREE FACES OF RESTLESTNESS

Three solo performances by three exceptional international dance artists are connected by an exploration of unrest—from stories and experiences passed down through generations, through anger and human fragility, to the desire to take flight and the confrontation with one’s own mortality. Rebecca Margolick (Canada), Charles Brecard (Canada) and Ching-Ying Chieng (Taiwan, United Kingdom) each explore, in their own way, those moments when the body can no longer remain in the same state: when restraint begins to move, when silence turns into anger, or when the desire for freedom collides with the limits of the body itself. Their works meet in different forms of unrest—in what remains trapped, in what erupts, and in what longs to take flight.
