Perfect Step?

Although dance technique is no longer as central or prescriptive as it once was in the organisation and creation of ballet, the step remains the basic element of dance and, in a way, its synonym. The first treatise on the correct positioning of a dancer’s feet dates back to 1589, while in 1725 the choreographer Charles-Louis Beauchamp codified the five foot positions on which classical ballet technique is based. During the centuries that followed, the steps themselves remained largely unchanged, while modes of interpretation shifted according to the aesthetic fashions of different historical periods.

Today, when the step functions as a link between dance and acting, blurring the boundaries between the two, the question arises: how much attention do choreographers and dancers still devote to its perfection? Does the choreographer still consider it relevant in an age of multimedia, installation and performance practices that shift attention away from the traditional essence of dance and towards other modes of expression? Does a choreographer still need to be familiar with dance vocabulary and able to distinguish between a plié and a tendu? Can the step itself lead the dancer towards perfection, or must the dancer also cultivate emotional and intellectual virtuosity?
