En–Knap began in 1993 in Leuven, Belgium, where Iztok Kovač shaped its first organisational form. A year later, he brought it to Ljubljana, Slovenia, establishing a production house and laying the foundations for a long-lasting presence in the international dance scene. 

After 15 years of project-based work, En–Knap Productions founded its permanent contemporary dance ensemble, En–Knap Group in 2007 and two years later took over the administration of the Španski Borci Cultural Centre, making it a home stage for its activities and a key venue in Slovenia dedicated to contemporary performing arts.

Over more than three decades, the organisation has grown into a 20-member team of cultural workers which, through a shift from project-based production to ensemble-repertoire and with the centre as a hub of contemporary culture and diverse audiences, has established a continuous and comprehensive engagement with dance across disciplines. 

This is En–Knap.

En–Knap is the largest structure for contemporary dance in Slovenia that develops, produces and presents contemporary dance as an artistic practice, bridging stage, film, public space and new technologies. Its portfolio of more than 80 stage works, over 20 films and more than 15 VR works has been presented more than 600 times in over 40 countries. Created in collaboration with more than 150 co-producers, these works have received over 20 awards. 

It engages audiences through stage, film and VR productions; performances for young audiences, a year-round programme of international dance, including the NaKnap festival; and choreographic interventions in public space and major national celebrations. In addition to maintaining a permanent ensemble, En–Knap's core activities include the continuous presentation of Slovenian and international contemporary dance, international and regional networking, co-productions, educational programmes, programmes for children and young people, and arts and cultural education.

This is En–Knap Group.

En–Knap Group is a repertory ensemble of six dancers. Since 2007, this international dance company has developed a repertoire of 40 stage works, created in collaboration with over 40 internationally and nationally renowned choreographers and directors from diverse aesthetic backgrounds. Over nearly two decades, guided by the artistic vision of Iztok Kovač, who has also created a significant body of work for the ensemble, the company has built a diverse repertoire through collaborations with choreographers from across Europe, developing a recognisable identity while remaining open to new artistic languages. 

En–Knap Group entered a new chapter in 2025 with the appointment of dancer and choreographer Mattia Cason as artistic director. The transition marks a shift within the ensemble while maintaining its commitment to collective practice, long-term research processes and dialogue with regional and international artistic contexts.

In 2007, En–Knap took over the administration of the Španski borci Cultural Centre, establishing it as the ensemble’s main venue and home stage, as well as a public platform for more than 30 programme partners. Since then, the centre has continuously presented international contemporary dance and performing arts productions while connecting artists with the local community. 

Together with Telo Moste, a new dance residency centre to be established in the premises of the former TEOL factory nearby, En–Knap is working to develop the Moste Dance Quarter: an interconnected system of performance venues, studios, residencies and public programmes that supports artists, audiences and the local community throughout all stages of the creative process. 

With more than 600 events annually, 40,000 visitors, five dance studios, residency apartments and artistic research programmes, En–Knap is building one of the most comprehensive infrastructures for contemporary dance in the region.

En–Knap is the initiator of the regional dance network Pan-Adria and an active member of European dance networks, including Aerowaves, IETM and Moving Balkans, while also participating in local audience-development initiatives such as the Audience Assembly and the Tovariški abonma programme. 

Through touring, co-productions, professional exchange, audience development and international collaboration, it strengthens regional collaboration while connecting Slovenian contemporary dance with wider international contexts.
