Masters of Time

2007

The performance Masters of Time brings the themes of Romantic ballet—Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, three cornerstones of the classical ballet canon—into the field of contemporary art. Its fundamental operation is a distinctly modernist gesture. The work proceeds from the assumption that, within the history of ballet, modernism never fully occurred on an ontological level. It therefore excavates a lacuna within the canonised discourse of ballet and inhabits it with the progressive artistic impulses of the twentieth century. This gesture is grounded in the belief that every artistic practice must, alongside proposing solutions on the level of form and content, continually return to a fundamental question: What is our practice? In this case, the question becomes: What is ballet? Or, more broadly: What is dance?

The performance addresses this question by bringing into view what usually remains hidden from the audience: rehearsals, the labour of training, and the dancers themselves as individuals with their own voices, desires and stories. It reveals the realities of a profession marked by physical demands and relatively short careers, while giving space to the dancers' reflections on the ideals, motivations and pleasures that sustain their practice. Attention is directed not only towards the finished movement, but also towards the processes, memories and aspirations that shape it.

Masters of Time unfolds in the space between the individual dancer and the idealised choreographic form, between desire and limitation, between dance discourse and the anxieties it produces, between memory and the experience of movement in the present moment. Dramaturgically, the performance is situated between rehearsal and performance, suspended just before the beginning of Swan Lake. Scenographically, Goran Petercol creates a dialogue between the verticality traditionally associated with ballet and the horizontality of contemporary dance. Chandeliers evoke the elevated world of classical ballet, while light and projected shadows disrupt this order and open a new intermediate space. Similar principles are echoed in the musical composition by Jean-Luc Plouvier.

Kovač places the mythology of the great ballet classics—Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker—alongside his own choreographic vocabulary, dislocating both traditions and turning them towards one another rather than back onto themselves. In doing so, the performance opens a space of encounter, reflection and transformation.
