Pursuit of Happiness takes on the myth and legacy of the American Dream and its aspirational aftermath. At its heart is the idea of “the pursuit of happiness”, enshrined in the United States Declaration of Independence as one of the “unalienable rights” of all human beings. But what is happiness? Where do we chase it, individually and collectively? How far are we willing to go in pursuit of it, and what might we encounter along the way? The work unfolds as an endlessly morphing folk tale of ultra-violent Western expansion. A Mexican bar man, an Austrian sales rep, a trip to Baghdad, a modern-day magic potion and a series of unsettlingly uplifting cowboy dances populate this strange and unpredictable journey.

press

One of the wildest things you’ll see at the theater this year. Pursuit of Happiness won’t change the world. It will change your night.

Alexis Soloski, The New York Times

It offers the revelation of the comic talents of Bence Mezei, the fictional En–Knap Group’s artistic director and the show’s star, who delivers Liška and Copper’s black humor with such disabused brio that he pulls us irresistibly into his totally failed artistic and political foray.

Molly Grogan, Exeuntnyc

Nature Theater’s irreverent tone is felt throughout the piece, while the physicality of EnKnapGroup’s performers adds something special to the show especially as it enters its second part which takes us from the mythical West to an almost too real Baghdad (anchored by Bence Mezei’s energetic, breathtaking performance),...

Jose Solis, Stagebuddy

The performers come from the Slovenian contemporary dance company En–Knap Group and deliver highly stylised fight sequences with remarkable virtuosity.

The New Yorker

Trump and Chekov joined together in a bizarre fusion of thriller and comedy.

Joost Ramaer, Ttheaterkrant

Pursuit of Happiness sets off an orgy of images, memories and emotions in the hearts and minds of the audience.

Joost Ramaer, Theaterkrant

The stunning stage presence of the En–Knap Group performers and their expressiveness are extremely convincing, especially since the performance Pursuit of happiness is an exception in the company’s repertoire.

Joost Ramaer, Theaterkrant

Absurd TV images run through your head: Trump receiving his supporters in the lobby of his tower, Trump proudly holding signed executive orders in the White House, the movies of Quentin Tarantino, parodies by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. But Eugene O'Neill, Arthur Miller and Anton Chekov are also echoed in the wonderful text, written as always by Liska and Copper.

bio

Nature Theater of Oklahoma is an OBIE award-winning New York art and performance enterprise under the direction of Pavol Liska and Kelly Copper. With each new project, we attempt to set an impossible challenge for ourselves, the audience, and our collaborators — working from inside the codes and confines of established genres and exploding them. No two projects are formally the same, but the work is always full of humor, earnestness, rigor, and the audience plays an essential role – whether as spectators or – just as often – as participants in the work. Using readymade material, found space, gifted properties, cosmic accident, extreme formal manipulation and plain hard work – Nature Theater of Oklahoma makes art to affect a shift in the perception of everyday reality that extends beyond the site of performance and into the world in which we live.
