Thomas Bos is a Dutch director, dancer and artist who graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2013. He works primarily in film and video, while also being a core member of the dance collective 155 (eenvijfvijf), which he co-leads with his brother Erik Bos.
Nachtkanon follows a naked man running in circles through the night. At first, everything seems almost suspiciously aesthetic: the darkness, the carefully framed body, the swelling music, the disciplined rhythm of the run. Then his penis starts to grow. And grow. And grow.
As the music builds, the image becomes increasingly absurd and grotesque, while the film stubbornly continues to present itself with the seriousness of an art film. What begins as a seemingly elegant nocturnal study gradually spirals into a bizarre physical joke about repetition, excess and the circularity of starting all over again. Nachtkanon knows exactly how ridiculous it is—and keeps running anyway.
