Black explores violence, emancipation, and the power of Black bodies in the contemporary world. Choreographer and performer Oulouy uses his body to interrogate historical and current moments, from the #BlackLivesMatter movement to the murder of George Floyd, questioning the position of African and African American bodies in Western contexts. Drawing from urban dance styles of Africa and its diaspora in the U.S.—Coupé-Décalé, Ndombolo, Azonto, Afrohouse, and Krump—Oulouy creates a visual and musical language that tells a story of struggle, recognition, equality, and dignity.
The performance employs minimalist, symbolic stage elements, transforming the body into a space of memory, resistance, and celebration. Every movement conveys both vulnerability and strength, frustration and hope, inviting the audience into a reflective and empathetic experience.
Born in Ivory Coast and based in Barcelona for many years, Oulouy is recognized as a key figure on the national and international urban dance scene. As a choreographer, performer, artistic director, and educator, he inspires audiences and dance creators worldwide. Black was selected for the Danza a Escena 2024 catalogue and forms part of Oulouy’s broader exploration of contemporary urban dance and African cultural heritage on the global stage.
