Double Bill: EKG dancers

What happens when you touch it is a performance, which plays between the physical and the mental, moving from the rational, linear, logical world into the world of the imagination. It is a game of impossibilities and warped reality filled with personal and collective consciousness and sub consciousness, where the stage is transformed into a fragmented door to another world. We communicate our thoughts, ideas and wishes, our non-sense, our illogical stories, the absurdity that keeps us sane, the unrealised wishes, the hidden aggression, the luminescent beauty, the gory details and bizarre connections, the obsessions, the worst-case scenarios and the superhuman abilities. Welcome to the playground of our minds. How does it look through your eyes?

All of a sudden the sun began to shine so strongly that the sunshine broke through the clouds and it ripped the ground and it went through my face, leaving a hole through my head. I felt no pain and actually I could touch the sunbeam. I took it out of my head and it became a laser sword...

Members of En–Knap Group set out in a duo and trio on an artistic journey along with students from the Academy of Visual Arts AVA, Ljubljana. The trip yields two performances, which coincidentally deal with a similar subject-matter – subconsciousness, imagination, dreams ... – but with an entirely different set of tools and media. Due to the dancer’s collaboration with young visual artists, both performances are visually stunning, employing a complex use of video, set and light design in a combination with music and spoken word. The performances play between the physical and the mental, moving from the rational, linear, logical world into the world of the imagination.

bio

Bence Mezei is a dancer, performer, choreographer based in Budapest, Hungary and Ljubljana, Slovenia. His artistic practice spans dance, acting, writing, directing and choreography. He is a member of the Obie Award-winning New York performance group Nature Theater of Oklahoma and has been collaborating with the company since 2016. In addition to his work with Nature Theater, Bence has collaborated with and danced for various international choreographers, theater and dance companies over the past decade, including Lionel Hoche, Anh Ngoc Nguyen, En–Knap Group, Club Guy and Roni, Hodworks, Dollardaddy’s among many others. Coming from dance as his first language, Bence approaches his works through a strong sense of rigour, rhythm and musicality, using language, dance and choreography to explore the dynamics of individual experience within the collective context.

Ida Hellsten joined En–Knap Group in 2012. She studied contemporary dance at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD), where she trained with teachers including Anton Lachky, Ted Stoffer and Milan Kozanek. Her education also encompassed ballet, improvisation, contact improvisation, jazz dance and street dance. In 2007, she participated in an exchange programme with the Tisch School of the Arts in New York and completed internships with Roberto Olivan, Anna Vnuk and Carl Olof Berg. Since joining En–Knap Group, she has contributed to the ensemble's repertoire through collaborations with a wide range of international choreographers and directors.

Luke Thomas Dunne’s formal training is in ballet, which he studied for 10 years at the Knighton Fields Centre as part of Leicestershire Arts in Education before studying at Laban (BA Hons Dance Theatre). Before leaving London, Luke had worked with Mark Lorimer, Jonathan Stone, Zoi Dimitirou, Caroline Muller, Aletta Collins and Anna Williams. In 2007 he successfully auditioned to be part of the ensemble En–Knap Group. Under the artistic direction of Iztok Kovač, the group collaborated with 20 Slovene and international choreographers and directors in three years.
