Established in 2003, Gibanica is Slovenia’s leading national platform for contemporary dance, presenting outstanding achievements in Slovenian contemporary dance to both domestic and international audiences. Its main programme is selected by an international panel of experts through an open call. Alongside performances, the biennial provides a space for encounters, exchange and networking among Slovenian and international dance artists and professionals.
For its 13th edition, selectors Alicja Berejowska (PL), Boštjan Antončič (SI/BE) and Metod Zupan (SI) chose eight performances from 59 submitted projects. Their selection was guided by the originality of each work's concept, the quality and coherence of its execution, and its contribution to the diversity of contemporary dance aesthetics and practices.
In their statement on Three Quarters of a Human, the selectors highlight the work's exploration of triple metre as both a social and choreographic form. The waltz, with its historical and social associations, becomes a framework for questioning relationships, power, intimacy, identity and belonging.
The selectors also draw particular attention to the performance of En–Knap Group:
“Repetition, persistence and determination underscore the strength of the En–Knap Group, which the dancers, through their subtle and consistently articulated movement, open up to vulnerability, all the while striving to maintain a connection with the audience.”
The selection offers a new opportunity to present the work to Slovenian and international dance professionals and to further strengthen the connections between Slovenian contemporary dance and the wider international scene.
