EN-KNAP Productions

The international dance group En- Knap was founded in 1993, by Iztok Kovač in Leuven in Belgium under the wings of the production managing house Stuc and the Klapstuk Festival. A year later the group moved its headquarters to Ljubljana , where it established as EN-KNAP dance company. The program of EN-KNAP is among other international coproducers from its beginnings financially supported by the Slovene Ministry of Culture and by the City Council of Ljubljana - Departement for Culture.

Root - Trbovlje
While it seems that Kovač's beginnings were quite ordinary, they are nevertheless particular and important for the formation of his specific aesthetics and their relation to stage presence. Already his first independent performances in the mid-eighties reveal that he did not forget his dance history, just like he did not forget the experience and historical weight of his birthplace - Trbovlje, whose revolutionary working class sentiment has deeply influenced Kovač's attitudes to the body and the formation of dance aesthetics. He joined this experience with that of contemporary dance spaces in urban European metropolises, with which he had become a familiar and integral part of, after his departure from Slovenia to go abroad at the end of the eighties.
Bojana Kunst

Iztok Kovač has frequently stated that to him growing up within the mental framework of socialism represents the absolute orientation point of communication with different worlds, with which he comes in contanct in his private and professional life. In his work, the point of reference is often his home-town Trbovlje – a mining town, and at the same time the Slovene symbol of grey, polluted and forsaken landscape of socialist heavy industry. His returns to his his-home town should not be understood merely as nostalgia or personal sentimentality, but as a return to the source of his own physical constitution, which was formed when surrounded by the bodies of workers and miners, in the alternating rhythm of work and test, in the environment constantly reminding one of the irreconcilable confilict between civilization and nature. However. In Kovač's choreography, the rural body of Trbovlje is constatly transformed and juxtaposed with the urban body of European towns, thus forming a third aesthetically cultivated body – the body of a dancer, the body of the group, and in the end – the body of every performance.

Beside the continuous stage and film production, En-Knap also organizes dance education activities since 1997; later developing into a department of the High school for pedagogy and gymnasium Ljubljana called the Secondary dance school for contemporary dance, as well as the educational program AGON, run by Maja Delak and later Mala Kline. With the support of Culture 2000, the international project CIMET is realized successfully with partners from Salzburg, Ancona, Novi Sad and Pulj.
Also after the establishment of EnKnapGroup, En-Knap organization continues building educational programs, wanting to create a group of younger dancers, ex-students of Secondary school for contemporary dance, from which new generations of dancers and choreographers will grow. The organization will strongly aspire to popularize contemporary dance among high school and university students.

Publishing activities
EN-KNAP production establishes a book collection Passages. The collection steps into the field of current problems, discourses of artistic and humanistic processes from the perspective of the flow of cultural and humanistic researches and activities, as well as formulation of contemporary cultural identities and theories. The chosen titles of the collection mainly want to support dance research and offer dance to express itself through the contents of current clashes and search in new media and in relation to it, and in that way to forward its creative drive. The editors of the collection are Maja Delak and Mala Kline.
